본 논문은 건축의 오래된 관심사이자 현대 건축에서 문제적인 주제인 건축의 기념비성에 대하여 논하고자 한다. 일상적인 건물(building)과 구별되는, 대문자 A로 시작되는 서구 건축의 역사에서 기념비성은 고급 건축(High Arcitecture)이 지향해야 할 주요한 가치로 여겨져 왔다. 건축물 자체의 사물적 속성과 연결되어 기념비성은 예술로서 건축이 구비해야 할 불가결한 특성으로 간주되어온 것이다. 오늘날까지도 건축의 기념비성은 공공 건축이나 공공의 기념비가 지녀야할 가장 중요한 자질이자 건축가들이 구현해야할 목표가 되는 경향이 있다. 거기엔 건축의 물적 구축, 형식적 표현을 통하여 기념비성을 불러올 수 있다는 끈질긴 믿음이 내재되어 있다. 그러나 한편 오늘의 기념비처럼 사회 속에서 건축의 소통적, 표상적 기능의 쇠퇴를 여실히 보여주는 사례도 없다 하겠다. 근대 이래로, 즉 모더니티라는 사회 문화적 상황이 도래한 이후로, 건축의 기념비성은 일대 위기에 당면하게 되었건만, 기념비성에 대한 사회적 요구는 여전하며, 건축가는 개인의 역량을 발휘하여 과제에 대한 독창적인 해석으로 대처해야 한다는 곤혹스런 상황에 처해있다. 본고는 기념비성을 둘러싼 이러한 위기적 사태에 주목하고 그에 대한 역사적 이해와 새로운 접근 가능성을 탐색해보고 하는 것이다. |

Considering on the crisis and dilemma of monumentality in Modern architecture, this study analyse the historic reason of decay and new possibility of monumentality within the context of contemporary socio-cultural context.
Historically monumentality has been considered as a main substance of High architecture in the tradition of Western Architecture. Difference between building and architecture mainly lies in monumentality which brings about esthetic quality. Usually architects take it granted that the physical and formal characteristics automatically cause the monumentality. But since the modern period the decline of communicative and representative function of architecture made this belief questionable. As Monumentality itself faced the dilemma with the modernity, ironically architects has to response to the task to handle the increasing social demands of monumental building.
This study firstly shows the dilemma of monumentality in depth in case of the holocaust museum. Then we analyse the concept of monumentality itself by means of theoretical view of A. Loos and A. Riegl We also analyse the change of role which monumental building played in history. Cultural and social change of context, and fundamental change of architecture old way of building a monument impossible.
In conclusion this study proposes the new concept and searches new horizon of monumentality with a finding of the otherness of monumentality. Conventional monumental building language has to give way to new approaches. With some examples we already can find a new possibility |
