본 연구의 목적은 대도시에 위치한 대학캠퍼스의 경계확장과 공간성장을 통한캠퍼스의 분산화 과정, 즉 단핵구조에서 다핵구조로의 변화과정의 이해이다. 본 연구는 미국 버클리 대학교의 사례를 중심으로 캠퍼스 공간의 경계확장 패턴, 캠퍼스 계획 및 개발정책과 캠퍼스 분산화과정의 목적, 타이밍, 방법간의상관관계를 고찰하려 한다.
버클리 대학교의 사례분석을 통해 캠퍼스의 분산화는 (1) 캠퍼스 지형의 부지 경사도와 건물의 건축양식 및 오픈스페이스의 공간배치, (2) 캠퍼스 중심공간의 교육기능과 중심외공간에 위치하는 학생기숙 및 보조시설, R&D 시설, 커뮤니티 공유시설 등의 통합된 공간 프로그래밍, (3) 캠퍼스 기능과 프로그램의 연계, 그리고 관련 학제별 유닛의 클러스터 구현을 추구하는 대학의 의도적인 분산정책으로 초기유도가 가능하다고 고찰되었다. 본 연구는, 성장하는대학캠퍼스의 계획은 장기적인 부지의 매입계획, 캠퍼스의 중심에 위치하는 기본 교육-연구기능과 외곽에 위치하는 기타 기능간의 통합적인 프로그래밍, 계획수립과 대학본부, 민간투자와 지방자치단체의 적극적인 참여유도로 가능하다는 결론을 제시한다. 또한 대학캠퍼스란 교육-연구인 대학의 기본기능을 수용하는 대학의 소유부지를 넘어, 민간기업이 참여하고 지역사회가 연계된 커뮤니티 시설, R&D 협력, 지역사회활동 등이 고밀도로 발생하는 대학소유부지 및 인접지역사회의 공간으로 정의하는 것이 대학캠퍼스의 성장과 개발을 준비하는 캠퍼스공간 계획수립의 시작점이라 제안한다. |

The intention of the study is to understand a development process at the changing boundary of university campus, particularly in a metropolitan urban setting a decentralization process from mono-centered layout to multi-centered precinct structure by in-depth case study of the University of California at Berkeley. Through this study, the goal, time, and method of the campus decentralization are thoroughly explored with historical analysis of the campus development in addition to policy-making for changing needs at the campus boundary throughout the years. The case analysis of UC Berkeley campus reveals three formative elements that help to decentralize various functions of the university campus: (1) the natural topography of the site as well as the architectural style of buildings along with spatial arrangement of open space; (2) the programming of core academic uses for teaching and learning as well as the non-core uses moving away from campus centers, such as student residences with their supporting facilities, research and development units, and community interface facilities at the boundary of the campus; (3) the deliberate efforts for strategic decentralization by the university to form a cluster of functional programs and disciplinary academic units. The study concludes that the strategic and long range development plans are an integral part of successful campus planning in the process of expansion from campus core to outlying periphery in order to accommodate the growing university population. But it also states that there are many driving forces to call for growth of the campus, such as long-term land and property acquisition strategy, integrated programming of core academic and non-academic uses, engagement of city’ s planning efforts and private sector investment in a mutual decision-making process. These conclusions also lead to propose that urban university campus be defined as a physical and functional space for both the university population and the city community where not only core academic and supporting activities take place within a boundary of the campus, but also university-associated activities, such as educational program, research and development, and community participation with private corporations influence the campus development and expansion at the boundary. |
