본 연구는 퇴계 이황이 조영한 도산서당(陶山書堂)의 원림과 수종·화초에 관한 연구이다. 이황이 저술한 퇴계전서와 그가 읽었던 중국 고전(논어·시경·서경·대학)을 통해서 도산서당 원림의 구성요소는 무엇이며, 어떤 수종이 선택되어 배식되었는지 알아보고자 한다. 원림요소는 도산서당과 그 주변에 있는 자연경물(景物)과 인공물들을 말한다. 또 이들이 성리학과는 어떠한 관계가 있는지를 퇴계의 시와 기문을 통해서 알아보고자 한다. 더불어 현장답사를 통해서(도면1참조) 이에 대한 확인과정을 갖는다. 퇴계 이황은 1557년도 산의 남쪽에 터를 잡은 후에 도산서당을 지었는데, 이는 낙강(洛江)의 강물을 굽어보고, 남향으로 배치해서 세워졌다. 당(堂)·재(齋)·사(舍)를 각기 도산(陶山)·완락(玩樂)·농운(雲)이라고 명명했다. 도산서당을 면해서 북에서 남으로 정우(淨友)·몽천(蒙泉)·절우(節友)·천연(天淵)·곡구(谷口)·천운(天雲) 등의 원림요소가 조성되었다. 또한 연(蓮)을 비롯해서 매화(梅)·대나무(竹)·소나무(松)·국화(菊)·버드나무(柳) 등의 수목과 화초가 배식되었다. 원림의 외적 요소로는 고산(孤山), 일동(日洞), 월명담(月明潭), 한속담(寒粟潭), 경암(景巖), 미천장담(彌川長潭), 백운동(白雲洞), 단사벽(丹沙壁), 천사촌(川沙村) 등이 있으며, 특히 월란암 주변의 7대 3곡은 초은대(招隱臺), 월란대(月瀾臺), 고반대(考盤臺), 응사대(凝思臺), 랑영대(朗詠臺), 어풍대(御風臺), 능운대(凌雲臺) 등과 석담곡(石潭曲), 천사곡(川沙曲), 단사곡(丹砂曲) 등으로 명명되기도 했다. 도산서원의 배치 개념은 중용의 첫머리 구절 “天命之謂性, 率性之謂道, 修道之謂敎” 등의 경구와 상응하고 있다. 또 경물(景物)의 의미와 명칭을 정하는데 중국 고전의 시구(詩句)나 경전(經典)의 내용들이 차용되고 있다. |

This article studies the landscape-garden and plants·flowers of Dosan-Seodang built byToegye. What is the compositional element of landscape-garden and which kind of trees wasselected to be planted are the key themes of this article. The compositional element oflandscape-garden of Dosan-Seodang encompasses the natural and artificial elements inscenery of Dosan-Seodang and its surrounding area. How these themes are related with Neo-Confucianism is another subject, which requires some research through the poems and somewritings of Toegye. And field works was made to ascertain some points in reference to thethemes. Toegye, Yi Hwang located Dosan-Seodang at the south of Dosan in 1557 to put it infront of Nak river. He named Dang as Dosan, Jae as Wanrak, and Sa as Nongwoon. From thenorth to the south of Dosan-Seodang, landscape elements such as Jeongu, Mongcheon, Jeolu,Cheonyeon, Gokgu, Cheonun were placed to set up the landscape-garden. The trees andflowers of Japanese apricot, bamboo, pine tree, Chrysanthemum morifolium, willow as wellas lotus were planted. The outer part of landscape-garden was composed of Gosan, Ildong,Wolmyeong-Dam, Hansok-Dam, Gyeong-Am, Micheonjang-Dam, Baekun-Dong, Dansa-Byeok, Cheonsa-Chon and the geographical elements of seven dae and three valleys near theWolran-Am were named Wolran-Dae, Goban-Dae, Eungsa-Dae, Rangyeong-Dae, Eopung-Dae, Neungun-Dae, Choeun-Dae and Seokdam-Gok, Cheonsa-Gok, and Dansa-Gokrespectively. The basic concept of building plan of Dosan-Seodang corresponds with the firstsentence in Joong-Yuong, “天命之謂性, 率性之謂道, 修道之謂敎”. -What Heaven hasconferred is called The Nature ; an accordance with this nature is called The Path of duty ; theregulation of this path is called Instruction. Poetry or lines in ancient Chinese writings werequoted to determine the meaning and the name of natural and artificial elements of scenery inthe landscape-garden. |
