Yet its disputed origin and exact meaning require further investigation. The thesis tries to clarify its development in history by combining related Chinese and Japanese research materials. Then, based on previous building and pictorial studies, attempts are made to reconstruct Song and Yuan Zen monastery models with information from historical literature.
