Koreans have a history of 5,000 year and have lived in Korean-style house so many years that it became an element of the Korean culture. A long-time history is not something that could be abandoned easily and nor is the Korean-style house. I therefore present the following propositions for the adaptation of traditional Korean-style House as the housing culture of Korean people. Supporting policies There is not yet a good deal of demand for the Korean-style house and the supply is normally done almost manually in the majority of cases. Especially, the demand could not get elevated with its building expenditure which surpasses the normal housing by 200 to 300 percent. So it’s better to support a part of building expenditure for the construction of Korean-style houses. The Korean-style houses in the southern province of Jeollanam-do could be made possible on the strength of 40 million KRW of grant and 30 million KRW of low-interest(2%) loan. If other regions follow the precedent set by southern province of Jeollanam-do, the adaptation of Korean-style house in Korean society could be more easily possible. Building Korean-style houses in rural villages There is a project by Korea Rural Corporation supporting construction of residential complex in rural villages. In other words, constructing a new village on a new ground. The corporation has invested a number of budget and resources in projects for creation of rural villages, which vitalized rural regions by boosting the increase of the urban population returning to rural villages. Encouraging the construction of Korean-style houses and supporting a certain amount of building cost could contribute to the popularization of Korean-style houses nationwide. Building Korean-style public buildings The attention has to be paid to the importance of the widening of the scope of Korean-style house. Concerning public buildings, it’s better to start from small but useful buildings such as community hall in rural villages. Community hall in Korean-style could also give a chance to multicultural families of experiencing Korean culture. Educational facilities could be also exemplary. Maybe main school building could be built in modern style but building annex building in Korean-style could be a good idea and be used as libraries, cafeteria or workshop place. Those facilities could be more needed in urban area. Health center which exists in every rural village could also be a good example. It could give a relaxed feeling to patients. Another factor : the will of local government heads Local government heads has a long period of tenure and has a discretion to carry out policies that they favor. Especially, wide-area autonomous communities could employ a large amount of budget. So the only question is the will. A classic exemple would be the southern province of Jeollanamdo. If its case could be known nationwide, the popularization of Korean-style houses could be much more easy. Realizing the importance of architectural design of Korean-style house Architectural firm plays an essential role. The plan changes with a simple position of a pillar and the wall structure could ameliorate or aggravate the insulation issue which is a big problem for the building of Korean-style house. The design of Windows and doors influences largely the whole shape of a house. The mindset towards the design of Korean-style house should be changed such as the education of Korean-style house design for director and staff, preparing design documents(detail plan, facility draw, drawing for windows and doors) in responsible way, construction supervision and assessment after moving in. The society is changing very fast lately. Korean-style houses could be ignored as a sort of antiquity before the industrialization era. However, Korean-style house could give a feeling of Korean traditional culture such as sentiments, health and formativeness and therefore could be a sustainable housing culture for any period of time. For the emergence of Korean-style house as an important residential place of this era, educational institutions should present a practicable theory, public officials should support with policies and industrial people should not see this as just a market-oriented project. |
