Despite growing interests in Hanok in recent years and invigorated policies and projects related to it, basic data of the market are not sufficient. A status of the Hanok market are as follows, by using statistics of the status of wood architecture industry and survey reports on construction industry statistics. The number of construction permitted on wood structures nationwide for the recent 5 years from 2007 to 2011 is 50,429 in total. According to a status of construction permitted by National Statistics Office, out of 159,047 in total, the number of newly-built structure permitted nationwide as of 2011, newly-built wood structure permitted is 12, 980, accounting for 8.2 percent as of 2011. According to recent trends of construction permitted from the status of construction permitted by National Statistics Office, a total ground area permitted for newly-built architecture in 2011 is 112,278,855㎡, and out of it, the area permitted for newly-built wood structure is about 815,156㎡, accounting for 0.73 percent. If wood structure is about one percent of a total construction permitted, and Hanok is about 10% of wood structure construction, the size of wood construction market is about 1, 500 billion won on average, which estimates about 150 billion won for the Hanok market. According to data of survey reports on construction statistics by National Statistics Office, sales on Hanok construction reached 122.3 billion won and 116.3 billion won in 2007 and 2010, respectively. For average component ratio of sales, traditional style building accounts for 37 percent, and other cultural property and historic remains accounts for 67 percent; this is inclined to construction related to cultural property. For component ratio of order price by sector, a public sector accounts for 66% and a private sector accounts for 34%. For the public sector, the central government keeps a constant ratio of it, whereas local governments accounts for the majority of it, keeping increasing. Currently, a status of Hanok market is difficult to be considered as a single industry in terms of its size and system. However, growing interests in Hanok and increasing politic, financial supports for Korean-style house of central and local governments indicates that a period forming a base for the Hanok market and enables it to secure its position serving as a single industry in the medium and long term. |
