Communication does not require discourse but discourse is useless without communication. In all development as well as progress of architectural public discourses which I have experienced in New York, there were storytellers. The two friends who established 'Friends of the High Line' chose to publish a collection of photographs shot by Joel Sternfeld as their first step. It was an attempt to speak to the public through images. Creating a web-site was the first thing the three designers did in order to get the +POOL idea out. Their unique visual style caught the eyes of the public. Various channels of public communication, including videos among others, were utilized for their 'Kickstarter' campaign. Personally, I think architecture itself accounts for a maximum of 50%. This is likely even for the most distinguished architects. I believe that all architecture, be it a palace, a corporate headquarter or a private residence, is about the stories it tells. That is only human. People love good stories. They get it immediately. When it is engaging, stories are passed on. Discourse can only be communicated to the public through interesting stories. |
