Architecture is like a bowl that contains our lives. Therefore, it can be considered the right one only when we can live and do what we like in it without any inconvenience. As more importance has been placed on creating spaces such as roofs or ceiling, and floors, activities and comfort are being more ignored in architecture. Besides, when we assume that convenience and safety are also put into consideration for architecture, it could be only limited to normal and routine circumstances. For those reasons, it is considered that architecture cannot follow the rapid change of its surrounding environment. As our life is uncertain, accidents can occur anytime and anywhere. This is one of the most important factors why architecture should ensure safety at least for such unexpected accidents. Air is a very important element for all living beings to survive, and indoor spaces are the common environment for human beings. An important characteristic of indoor spaces is that they are related directly to the modern life style but it also has a variety of pollutants in it. Indoor air pollution due to various reasons has a negative impact on human health and people are not aware of it. Particularly on children and elder persons who have weaker physical strength and immunity, it has a more serious impact than the one on other people. Nowadays people spend more time indoors than before. Furthermore, the indoor spaces tend to be more enclosed for better privacy, protection and safety. Even when we move from one place to another, we experience being in enclosed spaces such as cars or subway. Especially the efforts of many industries to reduce energy consumption and increase energy efficiency make indoor space more enclosed. In addition, as construction materials composed by chemicals are more used, a variety of issues related to indoor environment air quality arise from materials that before have not been considered problematic. Representative examples are ‘new house syndrome’, ‘indoor air pollution’, and ‘building syndrome’. Indoor air of various spaces such as houses, schools, offices, public buildings, hospitals, underground facilities and transportation is polluted by multiple causes. The truth is that the polluted air has a negative impact on indoor residents in a long term but also it can seriously threaten their life in a short term. It is necessary to look into air quality of buildings which are our shelters and directly connected to our life. Developed countries like the ones in Europe have reinforced the regulations on the use of chemicals and have efficient measures against environmental damages by chemical accidents. Accordingly, Korea should also make efforts to implement preventive, protective and countermeasure systems against chemical mishaps and improve them to protect the national safety and health. Those kind of harmful chemicals keep increasing, and countermeasures should vary for each chemical material. Even the less toxic chemicals could cause a serious damage to environment if there is a high concentration exposure of them in a certain area. For this reason, safety and counteraction manual should be prepared for chemical material and distributed to related organizations so they can take proper actions when accidents take place. Work places that handle chemicals should be properly monitored and the supervisors should receive regular training so they can be aware of the importance of safety. It is not wise to call the doctor after dying. We need the wisdom to be fully prepared for disasters. |
