For the past several decades, information technology and architectural design education have been combined, so as to research new design methodology for creative architectural works. Since 2011, the KAAB (Korean Architectural Accrediting Board) has added digital design and BIM(Building Information Modeling) curricula in SPC, highly regarding digital education. One of prestigious academia of European digital design education, the eCAADe (Education and research in Computer Aided Architectural Design in Europe) shows tendency to teach digital design out of the box of the previous twodimensional Euclidean analog. Instead, novel thinking, on free-form architecture, representatively three-dimensional freeform surface and innovative interpretations of curves, and engineered design with BIM, have been developing. Various problems occur when the existing architectural curriculum attempts to introduce courses related to digital design curricula such as free-form architecture and BIM. The previous curriculum of digital education was focused on teaching skills to handle and use different software programs. There is an obvious limit in this receptive and repetitive pedagogic in that it restrains critical factors in architectural design pedagogic. Therefore, this article introduces digital architecture courses, which were positively evaluated in the KAAB program held in the second half of the year 2013, in the School of Architecture at Kyungpook National University (KNU). Pedagogical curricula of digital architecture adapted in the School of Architecture at KNU, and the pedagogical meaning and methodology of free-form architecture, BIM, and digital design are discussed. This article is expected that the contents of graphic-based algorithm and interpretation for freeform architecture, BIM, and digital design will play critical and essential roles for digital architecture curricula in other university. |
