In light of a long history of architecture, the recent technologies of digital design are bringing rapid changes in the design environment of architecture. However, it is true that our understanding and knowledge about the technologies are not enough to accept the new era, and the theory and paradigm changes are also insufficient to support them until now. Today, there are the major changes in architecture resulting from digital design; geometric design approach and performance based design through simulation, and digital tectonics through digital fabrication. In this article, we will discuss about the effects of these changes, especially focusing on digital fabrication through one of the recent architectural experiments. In summary, 1) Digital Tectonics: Increased potentials for architects' tectonic expressions and the new ways of tectonics which was impossible without the digital design. 2) Design Flexibility: Maximized design flexibility through parametric controls from the initial design to the specific details over the whole design process. 3) Collaboration Tools: Collaborative informative-design platform and objective design development through active communication and immediate feedback. 4) Construction Efficiency: One step more advanced design considering construction and structure phase which makes it possible to predict every elements in next steps. 5) Scope of Designers: Expanded scope and widen view of designers who are able to be directly or indirectly involved in the whole process of design. |
