This paper is inquiring into the origin of the words, Ondol and Gudeul and their dictionary examples and the practical definition in real life. In addition, this research is trying to verify each definition of Ondol and Gudeul of Korea, China, Japan and English-speaking world. To conclude, the origin of words, Ondol and Gudeul, are different but those are practically same meaning. And the definition and origin of Ondol are slightly different in Japan, Europe and China. The Japanese Ondol adopts Korean Ondol in its sound-integrity while in China the word of Ondol has not been used until now; instead they call it Kang as heating system. Kang(?) is standing-up-style and putting-on-shoes-style. And the Ondol installed in modern architectures like villas and apartments are called dinuan(地暖) or dile(地熱). In English Korean Ondol is called in its integrity and partially the thing called as panel heating referred to Warm Water Ondol or electric Ondol. This is similar to our Ondol in heating the floor but is different from Korean Ondol in putting on shoes and standing up style. |
