Although concrete is the most widely used construction material, it has shortages such as low tensile strength, brittle fracture characteristic, and deterioration of durability due to cracking. However, smart concrete is quite different from conventional concrete. It is integrated with sensing and actuation function, and includes self-sensing, self-healing, selfadjusting, self-heating, self-cleaning, electromagnetic (EM) shielding/absorbing, energy harvesting, light-transmitting, and aircraft arresting properties. This article reviews the recent researches of three types of smart concrete developed in Korea in recent years; self-sensing concrete, self-healing concrete, and energy-harvesting concrete. For the self-sensing concrete, mortar, concrete and reinforced concrete mixed with the powder of cokes and milled carbon fiber. It can be recognized that conductive materials with powder of cokes and milled carbon fiber can be applied for self-diagnosis of flexural fracture in composite mortar, concrete and reinforced concrete specimen. For the self-healing concrete, PVA fiber reinforced strain-hardening cement composites showed self-healing performance. Surface cracks of concrete was healed by using polymer coating incorporating a microencapsulated healing agent. A research for bacteria adsorption capacity of expanded vermiculite was also reviewed. For energy harvesting concrete, a study about shape stabilized phase change material (SSPCM) was reviewed. The SSPCM showed a good heat storage performance even after it was mixed in concrete. As mass ratio of SSPCM is higher, SSPCM concrete exhibited higher heat storage and heat transfer delay performance. Although there is still a long way to go for field application, it is believed that smart concrete will bring development of construction materials, new branches of research and job. |
