If the traditionalist trend develops the pre-rationalist movement, it leads to a new vocabulary (Expressionism)> This tendancy is defined to the architectural movement in the period of 1910-1923 in Germany. The social situation in Gothic period as an era of transition is similar to that in the beginning of 20th-century. The liberalist trend started from the period of the French Revolution. At that time,the revolutionary sysmbolic architecture was known as architecture parlante. When it reappeared in recent years, it was given the name of Expressionism. The artistic trend and the social situation were the backgrounds in which modern architeccture generated. Art Nouveau was a world-wide phenomenon in Europe, but Expressionism was not common to all the European counturies. De Stijl and constructivism,compared with Expressionism,started from the style (Cubism)which had already developed highly. Although the backgrounds of Art Nouveau, Expressionism and de Stijl were continuous, these movements were not successive. But we can say that Expressionism played an important role in the process of the development of modern architecture. |
