This paper focuses on a Russian Architect-Seredin Sabatin-who was engaged by the Maritime Customs and the Royal Court over twenty years during the Opening Period of Korea. Main contents of this paper are related to the details of employment, academic/practical career, and surroundings of architectutal activities of Sabatin. In addition, author treated the attitude in receving western architecture at that time through surveying difficulties of his architectural activities. The result of this study reveals that Sabatin is one of the colonial architects, so called general engineers, whose activities were done around various open ports and settelments in Eastern Asia in the 19th century.The employment and personnel management of Sabatin was underthe control of the Inspector-General, not Korean Government. Thus the employment of Sabatin virtually had nothing to do with receving western architecture in Korea at that time. Also, Korean government had no specific plan in relative to his employment. He was just temporarily employed for surveying the settelments and construction some western style palace. Under these circumstances. Sabatin's status was depended upon the situation of the Inspector-Cenerals and foreigner advisors for the King. In this context, he was entirely cut-off from Koreans. With these reasons, he sometimes encountered severe troubles with Korean officials and engineers in his career in Korea.Thus, architectutal activities of Sabatin could not influence upon the learning of western architecture in Modern Architectural History of Korea and left only as a isolated historical fact. |
