The purpose of this study was to find out characteristics of crime-prone locations through the theories of Space Syntax Theory. Most of the analyses were conducted on the actual burglary cases in the apartment complexes. Based on the results of the study, architectural planning and design guidelines were suggested in order to improve the safety of the residential area. Many existing studies have shown that crime occurrences are closely related to the physical environment. But most of them have been simply descriptive and speculative, explaining and asserting that the crimes can be described in terms of situational or dispositional approach. They thus seem to be limited in its application to architectural planning and design. For this, a quantitative and objective method of spatial analysis is called for. Crimes tend to occur in locations where one cannot easily grasp the surrounding areas. Thus, for crime-free environment, we should design a setting so that the control value of the setting should be high. |
