Gentrification is the restoration and upgrading of deteriorated urban property by middle classes, often resulting indisplacement of lower income people. It has now been identified in a large number of cities in North America, Europe and Australia.
In order to explain this phenomenon, this paper reviews the major theories of Gentrification which have emerged over the last 20 years and the debate which has surrounded them.
The study of gentrification has started from 1960. But, during the 1970s, Attempts to evaluate the extent of gentrification have been hampered by the general scarcity of timely, relevant, and geographically detailed data. As 1980 census data have become abailable, studies have begun to analyze the effects of changes for both specific neighborhoods and cities. Since the 1990, the subjects of gentrification have diversified and expanded in relation to the gender, the class and the uneven development.
To date, There is no evidence that gentrification have occurred in Korea. But, in the context of the change of household size, the growth of white color classes, and the policy of local municipalities, It can e expected that gentrification will occur in Korea. |
