One of important contemporary tasks of historical studies on Korean urban planning is to analyze the urban planning context in each city. It includes historical transition and trends toward urban structures and development projects: street networks, land development project, and situational environment, so on. This study aims at discovering the historical transition and the periodic characteristics in terms of urban planning context in Jinju city through collecting historical data and literature. For this study, the history of Jinju urban planning can be divided into five stages: the prehistory age; Chosun dynasty age; the colonial age; the modern times (1945~1960); the present age (1970~presently) The results obtained from the historical approach to urban planning are followings; First, feasible urban planning should be established based on planning rationality. Second, the continuity of planning under historical classification should be provided. Third, more citizen participation in planning process should be possible for future planning. Fourth, intensive evaluation of the existing comprehensive plans and development projects should be done parceling with feed-back process. This historical study on urban planning is expected to provide a basic reference to underpin urban planning history in local cities. |
