Today, due to high level of public interest towards advanced knowledge and development required variety of fields to update their ideas. This movement also had influence even on the museum architecture to redefine its traditional concept which is simply a place to view displayed art. The new concept is expected to provide the public with different spaces by combining various forms within a space where people can have multi functional experiences. Its design must reflect the sensitivity towards the advanced and highly intellectual public's expectation so the place can continuously provide not only the physical needs of the people but also to create the best environment for the art itself.
This particular study is to compare and analyze between two of Mario Botta's museum projects, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA) and Museum Jean Tinguely. Its main focus is to reveal the design elements and its characteristics from both projects through various data research on the surrounding site condition, site plan, floor plan, entrance accessibility, structural elements, exhibition space organization, lighting plan, and hierarchy of the circulation pattern. At the end of this study, we may find out what the intended message of the architect to the new study of modern museum architecture.
Mario Botta has been successful in creating public space which reflects the surrounding environment and come up with the best solution to keep the balance between form and the function. Mario Botta's talent in manipulating basic geometry to create a new image in his design can be seen from introducing the stripe patterned box structure and circular tube structure in these specific projects. His careful consideration of bringing the natural light within the museum makes the exhibition space very comfortable and visitor friendly environment. His bold suggestion on spatial organization can be marked as another distinctive characteristic of Mario Botta's design concept. He proposed in total separation between served and serving space, interchangeable space between travelling show space and the special event space, and new ways of operating museum shops and cafes. Through these proposal, Mario Botta has made an important contribution to the development of the museum architecture in new era. |
