미국을 대표하는 세계적 건축가 프랭크 로이드 라이트(Frank Lloyd Wright, 1867-1959, 이하 라이트로 표기)는 이 시대의 예술과 건축을 발전시키고 전세계의 현대 건축을 이끌어 온 대표적 건축거장 중의 한 사람이다. 그는 현대 건축 역사상 어느 건축가보다도 많은 작품(1,141점)을 디자인하였고, 실시된 작품만도 532점에 이르며, 현존하는 작품 숫자만도 409점에 달한다. 그의 작품은 예술적인 측면에서 그 가치를 인정받고 있는 동시에, 이들 중 1/3이상이 사적(史蹟)으로 등록될 정도로 건축역사상 크나 큰 문화유산을 남긴 셈이다.그는 그의 작품 속에서 건축 설계는 물론 내부의 가구 및 직물, 조명기구, 유리공예, 식탁용품, 은제품, 그리고 그래픽 디자인 등도 직접 디자인한 토탈 디자이너(Total Designer)이다. 또한 그는 자연에서 유추 된 원리와 형태를 건축조형의 기본으로 하여 일명 유기적 건축(Organic Architecture), 프레이리 하우스(Prairie House), 유소니언 하우스(Usonian House) 등의 원리를 정립하였다.라이트는 인간의 진정한 가치와 자연에서 얻어진 지식에 기초를 두는 동시에 언제나 새로운 건축과 실내환경을 유기적으로 모색하기 위해 부단히 노력한 건축가이다. 또한 그는 미국의 신 개척(New Frontier)정신을 바탕으로 사회와 국가를 위한 민주적 디자인(Democratic Design), 그리고 언제나 본인의 건축과 실내의 요소들을 총괄하는 토탈 디자인(Total Design)의 개념을 관철한 건축가이기도 하다.따라서 본 연구는 자연을 모티브로 한 라이트의 유기적 디자인 원리(Organic Design Principle)를 통하여 실내·외의 유기적 연계성을 찾아보고, 특히 토탈 디자인에 대한 개념을 공간구성 및 실내 디자인 요소에서 찾아보려는데 목적과 의의를 갖는다. 본 연구의 범위는 실내환경을 이루는 공간구성과 가구, 유리제품과 예술작품으로 국한한다. 분석대상 작품의 선정은 기존의 출판된 자료를 토대로 이루어졌으며, 이에 대한 실사로 분석되었다. 본 연구는 현대 실내건축의 가이드 라인 역할을 할 것으로 기대한다 |

Although Frank Lloyd Wright represents himself as one of the greatest American master architect, the master architect's contribution towards the advancement in the modern history of architecture goes beyond just creating landmark buildings. Through out his life, he was the leading architect not only in the area of architectural design but showed his talent in interior architecture, furniture, fabric, lighting fixture, art glasses, tablewares, silver wares as well as in graphic design which should cover all the elements related to the "total design" in architecture. As seen in his architectural design, the "total design" concept also reflects both beauty and logic of the nature and strengthens his theory of the organic architecture design. The research began with finding out the relationship between his architecture, nature and the supporting design elements mentioned above. The purpose of the research is to analyze the relationship of the spatial organization and the design elements in Frank Lloyd Wright's architectural works from the point of "total design" view and provide the valuable guide line for the development of the modern interior design. His design theory, based on the fundamental ideas of the nature, his organic architecture design, and reference materials to support total design concept will be discussed on chapter 2. And on chapter 3, application of the total design in his actual project will be analyzed. The data and analyzation have been completed based on written references and actual visit to the project sites.Frank Lloyd Wright placed highest value on the human beings and enjoyed presenting new ideas and forms to create better environment for the humans through his architecture and interior design projects. While he was presenting new ideas he continued to support design for democracy which has close relationship to the new frontier spirit of America. He was the master architect for the general society with accurate understanding of the life style of the public with design sensitivity shown in his concept of the total design |
