일찌감치 현대 건축재료인 철과 유리를 사용하여 무주공간을 설계하였던 미스 반 데 로에(Mies van der Rohe, 1886-1969, 그림-1)의 주요작품들을 통하여 공간구성의 특성을 분석하고, 미스가 추구한 공간들을 사례를 통하여 분석 및 이해하는 작업은 현대 실내건축공간의 메이저 스페이스(Major Space;어떤 건축의 중심적 역할을 하는 중요한 대공간) 및 시대적 요구를 충족시켜 줄 수 있는 공간을 창출하는데 주요한 역할을 할 것으로 기대하며, 이에 이 연구의 목적과 의의를 두고자 한다. 미스는 프랭크 로이드 라이트(Frank Lloyd Wright), 르 꼬르뷰지에(Le Corbusier)와 더불어 세계 3대 건축의 거장(巨匠)이다. 그는 독일에서의 실험적 건축활동과 Bauhaus 교육이념을 가지고 미국으로 이주하면서 그의 작품을 실현하고 건축교육체계를 정립한 건축가이자 교육자이며, 철학적 사고를 가지고 건축의 문제를 분석하여 해결한 건축가이다. 또한 그는 일관성 있는 작품으로 일생을 현대건축 발전에 공헌하였으며, 다른 건축가에게 많은 귀감을 주었다. 본 논문에서는 미스의 건축활동과 공간구성의 특성을 알아보고, 무주 공간의 구성요건을 분석하고 종합한다. 분석대상이 되는 작품들은 정보자료가 될 문헌과 가급적 실사를 통하여 분석하였다. |

Along with Frank Lloyd Wright and Le Corbusier, Mies van der Rohe is one of the three most influential masters in modern architecture. Mies was the last group to graduate from the Bauhaus School and had many projects in Germany in 1938. Due to the political situation, he had immigrated to U.S. and served good part of his life as the Dean at the Illinois Institutes of Technology. He has completed many projects in his life which has made him the greatest architect, educator, and philosopher in the 20th century. Additionally, his continuous accomplishments with his unique design style has made significant remarks in architectural history.
The purpose of this study is to analyze Mies' spatial configuration, focuses on the concept called "Column-Free Space." By analyzing the interior space of Mies will be beneficial and valuable guide line for planning of the future interior architectural space.
The method of research was to visit his buildings and compare written documents on his projects. The results are as following;
- Revealing building structure and making logical decisions to problems caused simple and dynamic structural architecture to exist.
- Well balanced use of structure, proportion and materials are the main ingredients of making the Column-Free Space exceptionally beautiful.
- The hierarchial orders within the space is the basic rule in designing the Column-Free Space.
- The relationship between the ceiling height and overall floor dimension has influenced on making a flexible and functional open space.
- "Less is More" is not just a conceptual terminology. It requires simplicity and means flexibility by reducing all unnecessary ideas. |
