Particularly, the main purpose of thisstudy is to examine whether New Urbanism falls under the modernist orpostmodernist approach. The variety of concepts of modernism andpostmodernism are reviewed in the diverse points of view for this. The conceptsof modernism and postmodernism play the role of the analysis framework for thisstudy. This study identifies that New Urbanism might be classified as apostmodern trend although some modernist rhetoric is found in it. This studyfinds out that some modernist slogans such as community and social reform arenothing but rhetoric to embellish the approach. However, this study puts apremium on the meaning of New Urbanism as a new paradigm of urban planningalthough the social slogan raised by the movement sounds unrealistic. It isbecause New Urbanism is a counterplan of urban planning to rapidly changingsocial environment. Market, ecological environment and plural values arecontinuously thought much these days.
