This paper summarizes the house layout and structure of Korean traditional semi-2 story house that appeared in the modernization process of Korea. Fundamentally, although the activity-flow in the "Maru-room" of the traditional house remains unchanged, the new vertical activity flow of "room-stair-second floor"(second floor with rooms and stair) are added spatial element. Having been made a full sized space that overlapped with the original attic space, such second floor makes a significant difference from Korean traditional 2 story shop house in space organization and appearance. The attic space of the first floor showed the roof beam as it was, and expanded the height of a ceiling, and was utilized as collection and refuge space. When the focus of the position of stairs is placed and the character of the second floor space is considered, it turns the exclusive [Korean traditional semi-2 story house] to other extra activity requirement of a home. The roof and eaves was made simpler and light material was used for the roof. However, it is characteristic that the roof curve of the traditional house was adopted. In the facade a new material?glass, was used extensively. The traditional house employed a typical five-span structural form in the ground plan and three-span in the attic floor and the roof. It is the feature to use BOAJI for decoration under the beam that hides the curved beam. This is a feature, which only Korean traditional semi-2 story house has, and can be said to be a special technical performance in the beam structure. Korean traditional semi-2 story house raised on short stilts is a style on which the super structures were extended. It may be said that the development to a full second floor is a process that combines Korean traditional semi-2 story house with the requirement of modernization in Korea. |
