A bathroom in the residential building is one of the most important places all members of the family need to be able to use. Independent use of the bathroom is supposed to be a basic condition for independent living in modern society. The purpose of this study is, focussing on spatial dimension and fixture layout, to deduce the way of application of universal design to bathroom planning in apartment, which is a representative residential form in Korea. For this objective, 4 criteria of analysis were developed on the basis of domestic and foreign universal design codes & guidelines: (1)clear space, (2)work flow, (3)universal reach range, and (4)area for later use. Using these criteria, the accessibility of 7 types of the bathroom in dwelling units of 25～45pyeong(79.34～148.76㎡) in Seoul were investigated. Upon investigation, there were several constraint factors in using bathroom: bathroom size, width and opening direction of the door, threshold, width of the path to the lavatory, location of the centerline of the toilet and lavatory, and the clear space under the lavatory. In suggesting alternatives, it is clear that (1)within the area not smaller than current minimal bathroom(1,800㎜×2,400㎜), it is possible to plan the bathroom universally and (2)that a little consideration about the size and layout of opening and fixture would make the difference between independence and dependence. |
