The construction of an apartment complex in Kimpo, was structurally designed according to the structural standards of the year 2000 but construction work began in 2005 due to delays in obtaining official approval. In the process of examining the arrangement of reinforcement and its member force according to the new structural standards of KBC 2005, it was found that there would be difficulties in construction with the pre-existing materials. The Orthogonal effect which did not exist in KBC 2000, was found to be the main reason causing this problem. The purpose of this research, therefore, is to examine the Orthogonal effect on member force. Based on 15 story tower block and plate block apartment buildings examined according to KBC 2005, The following could be concluded from this research. (1) The Orthogonal effect increase in member force; a 40% rise in tower blocks with asymmetrical floor plans and a maximum of 27% rise in plate blocks without asymmetrical floor plans. (2) Parts of the columns in the pre-existing plan (KBC 2005 applied) are under a great deal of tensile force and in order to solve this problem, the bearing walls must be thickened and extended until they reach below ground level. Also, more columns must be installed and the thickness of the transfer plate must increase. (3) Non-symmetric floor plans in apartment building shall be continued into ground level without piloti. |
