Enclosed arcade has been applied to traditional markets for the improvement of their physical environments in South Korea. However, in some enclosed-arcade markets, occupants suffer from thermal discomfort during summer due to overheated indoor space caused by the solar radiation and deficient natural ventilation. This discomfort level varies according to the market structure and arcade form. This paper presents the results of comfort surveys and temperature measurements on the four enclosed-arcade markets with the different market structure and arcade form, and evaluates design approaches to improve the comfort level of market occupants. During the summers of 2003, 2004 and 2006, the comfort surveys were conducted, polling responses from 156 market occupants, while simultaneously measuring air temperatures and humidities. Numerical simulations were performed to evaluate fifteen design approaches for the improvement of the comfort level. From the temperature measurements, the indoor temperature was affected by the roof transmittance and opening for ventilation. Specially, in one of the four markets, having a roof transmittance of 0.7, the temperature difference between indoor and outdoor was recorded to +4.3℃. Its occupants suffered the thermal discomfort, and the great losses of goods spoiled and discolored by the solar radiation. The arcade roof was ultimately covered with the opaque plastic material. For certain, the transmittance of the roof material can be considered as a major design element. |
