Recently, in Japan, with the increase in the necessity of city environment improvement as problems arose due to the urban decline phenomenon, city arrangements policy and redevelopment of the downtown is briskly underway as a series of national policy-based operations for revitalization of the metropolis. This research is aimed at analyzing the realities of Japanese city re-arrangements operations through their mixed use oriented development cases where an aggressive city redevelopment is being enforced to regenerate the urban vitality through the revitalization of city districts which have lagged behind and re-arrangements of infrastructure with the awareness of the necessity of city environment improvement. This research is going to re-examine the concept and history of mixed use development through the cases of multi-patterned development centering on the downtown and sub-downtown with the recent interest going up toward the recent mixed use development. In addition, this research is also going to draw properties of the mixed use development at a viewpoint of the downtown regeneration by grasping the stream of Japanese city regeneration policy and analyzing the multiple-use development cases into three aspects - society-environmental aspect, systematic, policy-based aspect, and period-marking aspect. |
