Tamna Sullyeokdo shows the realistic and ideal figure of Jeju's nine forts of the 18th century. 1. The Jeju's military forts have two territories; a horizontal and vertical territory. A horizontal territory was worked as a military fort for depending from Japanese pirates, and a vertical territory as an administrative organization for horses and tangerines. 2. Judging from the location and the figure, the Jeju's military forts were originally made for ranches in Geryeo Dynasty. In the early Chosun Dynasty, they were made in inland of the Jeju island and had a square shapes. The forts for coasts defense had been built in the circle shape since the middle of the Chosun Dynasty. 3. The dorm of the forts was a three kan’s thatched house and couldn’t accommodate the government officers. An amory was considered as important as the dorm. 4. They also had spaces for the military training, checking up the horses and the archery tests. |
