This study aims to propose the characteristics and planning of campus underground space which has been developed frequently these days from a 'campus center' point of view. 'Campus center' can be defined as an intensive supporting facilities space of students' learning, activity, and culture-welfare service. Analysis on 5 underground campus center was done within the framework of site location, access, physical context, and composite programs. As a result of the analysis, underground campus centers have several characteristics, which are reorganizing campus block planning, openness to community, connection between the above-ground and underground, and improvement of walking environment. According to programing and site location, the types of underground campus center was classified into integrated center, local center, and multi center. In conclusion, planning elements of underground campus center according to these types and planning approach of underground space considering physical environment are proposed. |
