Since the Registered Cultural Properties System has been enforced, conservation of domestic modern architecture has been actively evolved. This study aims to propose methods to improve the uses of modern architecture by reinterpreting and redeveloping them to comply to the contemporary era, which is the most positive conservation method. Therefore, with the aim to find practicable conservation methods, processes to establish conservation strategies and specifications, based on evaluations on their historicity, possible use of space, and value of preserved elements have been analyzed. Buildings located in Seoul and of over 50 years have been chosen for analysis. Analysis shows that the time in which conservation plans for the buildings are established can be categorized as either 'primary period', 'historical period', 'final developing period' and 'eclectic choice', and becomes the critical deciding factor in the selection of conservation method. The methods are as follows; 1) reaction between facade and the enlarged & remodeled space, composed of 'juxtaposition' and 'insertion'. 2) 'primary preservation' and 'removing & reconstruction' for interior spaces. 3) enlargement in either 'horizontal extension', 'vertical extension', 'inter-reconstruction', and 'underground development'. |
