The design for tuned liquid damper (TLD), based on linear wave theory or tuned mass damper (TMD) analogy, is conducted under the assumption that the values of damping ratio, natural frequency and effective mass are constant. Unlike TMD, however, TLD has nonlinear dynamic characteristics with regard to response amplitude because its energy dissipation effect is based on liquid motion. So the non-linearity should be considered in the design of TLD for controlling seismic response which may induce the large liquid motion of TLD. In this paper, the response amplitude dependent damping ratio is evaluated through shaking table test using white noise signals. The transfer function of the shear force generated by TLD to the base acceleration is obtained and equations for evaluating the response dependent damping ratio of TLD are presented with regard to the different water depth ratios of TLD and non-dimensional base acceleration. |
