The potential of progressive collapse in typical tubular structures composed of tubular perimeter frames and internal pin-connected gravity frames was evaluated and appropriate retrofit schemes for internal frames were proposed. Two types of tubular structures, framed and braced tube structures, were considered. To initiate progressive collapse, one or many of the first story columns were removed and nonlinear static pushdown analysis was carried out to obtain vertical load-displacement relationship. According to the analysis results the exterior frames of tubular structures, which have narrowly-spaced columns or mega-braces, are generally not vulnerable to progressive collapse. It was also shown that the use of moment-connected internal frames or outrigger truss could provide enough resistance to progressive collapse caused by loss of a first-story internal column. The retrofitted structures also showed increased lateral stiffness and ultimate strength. |
