During the decades of the 1960s and 1970s, industrial cities of advanced countries have gone through de-industrialization process. The cities which were heavily depended upon manufacturing industries have been suffering from declining economies, unemployment, contaminated and abandoned lands, and under-used infrastructure. The City of Turin in Italy, the home of a large automobile company, FIAT, is one of the cities that have been suffering from such de-industrialization effects. The city, however, has shown considerable success in revitalizing urban land scape by converting factory buildings into commercial and office uses, promoting the service economies, and redeveloping abandon industrial lands into university campuses, residential areas, parks, etc. In this context, this paper introduces the process of launching the projects, analyzes key factors contributing to the success, and draws policy and theoretical implications. |
