The purpose of this study is set to assess the plans of program spaces and to suggest more appropriate use of those spaces. The methods used are field surveys on 6 samples of public libraries in Seoul and interviews with their administrators. The actual conditions of the facilities, their program operations, and the use of spaces for current library programs are analyzed. The results are as follows: Most programs of the public libraries surveyed can be categorized into five types: 1) reading-related classes, 2) linguistic information sessions, 3) fine arts appreciation sessions, 4) health information sessions, and 5) practical education programs for everyday life. The quantity of both program room and its furniture for children is insufficient though programs for everyday life. The quantity of both program room and its furniture for children is insufficient though programs for children outnumbered those for grown-ups. It is, therefore, necessary to secure and furniture more program rooms appropriately designed for actual users, especially children. In the majority of the program rooms, the seats are arranged forward-facing. However, some of the rooms need mutually-facing seat arrangements and furniture for the programs which require activities such as after-reading discussions or fine arts practical training. |
