The purpose of this study is to examine the transformations in large-scale land usage and changes in the urban structure during the process of modern urbanization of Seoul, the capital of the Korean Empire. To achieve this purpose, examination was made of Documents on Land Use Permits, Documents on Prohibition in the Use of Land, produced in the Korean Empire Period, and various blueprints produced in the related period. Changes in urban structure and large-scale lands in areas surrounding the South Gate and East Gate, both major gateways of the capital, differed. In the Cheongpa-4-gye districts of Yongsan, large-scale lands were put into use to build various modern facilities, such as schools, hospital and government offices, as well as extensions of existing residential areas. |
