Walking has emerged as an important issue in the area of transportation, urban planning, urban design and public health. The purpose of this study was to analyze the neighborhood environment affecting resident's walking. Random Intercept Linear Model & Random Intercept Logit Model are used with the date which were obtained by a survey. The sample size was 321 local residents in seoul. Analysis results show that a high level of land use mix in the neighborhood results in more walking steps, particularly, when using convenience facilities and going shopping. As more access to neighborhood park leads to more walking steps, park is an important factor in creating a walking-friendly residential environment. In particular, higher access to neighborhood park resulted in more walking steps for leisure purposes such as stroll and exercises. In terms of urban form, residents showed a high level of walking steps in an environment where the density of crossroads is high and streets are closely connected. Therefore, small blocks and many crossroads can contribute to creating a walking-friendly residential environment. In addition, the quality of walking environment, recognized by pedestrians, influences their walking when they use convenience facilities, go shopping, take exercise. In an effort to encourage walking, therefore, there should be an approach to qualitative factors such as enhancing the safety of walking in the neighborhood and securing the continuity of roads, as well as considering lands use, urban form and access to a facility. |
