The rapid switchover into the aging society has made the Korea government consider the importance of elderly housing and give a big boost to developing housing models for the elderly, establishing 'Elderly Housing Stabilization Act (not fixed)'. Developing a rental house for the elderly in the low-income bracket is in the process of the early stage in Korea. Global society has its direction towards trends of 'aging in place' and 'social unity'. We, therefore, studied a successful case of Affordable Elderly Housing「Mendelsohn」of San Francisco, CA to analyze differentiated peculiarities from the perspective of design and planning. Methodology of this study is interviewing with manager and CEOs of housing rental firms, collecting on site pictures and conducting secondary research for three days. The study finds that Housing Mendelsohn is located in the center of regenerated urban, with easier access to convenient facilities, consists of shared spaces for the residents in a specific way, has a wide variety of programs for mental stabilization and activity of the elderly and is planned to actively network to citizens living in near areas. We expect key findings of this study can possibly give implications of developing elderly housing in a Korean way. |
