In accordance with "regional balanced development policy" of the President Roh's Participatory Government, not only Multi-functional Administrative City (Sejong City), Enterprise Cities, and Innovation Cities on a national scale but also 12 new towns in the Metropolitan Area are under plan or being developed simultaneously. Taking into account negative views to those developments and positive aspects that this country‘s new town projects could be benchmarking cases from other countries, it needs to give consideration to urban development in the progress. Accordingly, this study focuses on where Korean urban development is now, what current problems we are facing and what we have to do. In order to do research on those things, this paper studied the history of city development in Korea. Focusing on the difference from the first new town projects, this study tried to give consideration into distinctive characteristics of new towns in the process and problems remained and show the desirable direction of new town and the developing method of a competitive city in the future. |
