This study is about road structure that forms the frame of the spatial structure of traditional villages. Physical analysis of road structure is the most desirable means to understand the thoughts and philosophies of village founders. Thus, based on four-stage road hierarchy suggested in previous researches, this study analyzed road structure in terms of cultural-social variables and physical variables. According to the results of this study, first, the outer road, which link a village to another village, were mainly constructed over the opposing mountain (the mountain in front of the village) on the opposite side of the guardian mountain (the mountain in the rear of the village). Second, the approaching road had different functions according to exposure and time. Third, the concepts of front and rear in Sung-Confucianism were also observed in road structure. Fourth, road structure inside a village conformed to the natural landform. Summing up the results of analyzing road structure according to the location characteristic of traditional villages, it was found that the road structure of villages had been influenced by the location characteristic of the village, historical changes, and ruling ideologies. |
