The "Long-term Care Insurance Law for the Elderly", which came into effect July 2008, now means that multi-functional welfare facilities could be a very effective in securing facilities for the elderly in urban areas. This study considers the important role of "intergenerational interactions" in multi-functional welfare facilities. These interactions are important for improving both the quality of welfare services and for the optimization of space layout in the planning of such facilities. The survey was conducted in social welfare centers located in Seoul, with integrated elderly daycare centers and nursery schools. Through the analysis of the survey results and the building plans for those facilities, it was found that both the staff and users were positive about the integration of the two facilities. Guidelines for the promotion of intergenerational interaction through spatial planning in social welfare centers are, therefore, suggested. |
