The Geriatric hospital for the aged in Korea only focuses on and develops the study of buildings, interior plan and design through the agricultural planning approach. They also confine themselves to indoor space to cause psychological and social isolation that prevents the elderly from various treatment activities and the development of social competence. In order to overcome psychological and social isolation in the hospital, the elements to promote outdoor safety and activities of the aged and the plans to make the most of outdoor space are needed. Therefore, the aim of this study is to suggest outdoor space planning elements of the geriatric hospital for the aged that support a healing environment to treat senile disorders. This study analyzes healing environment theories of medical facilities for the aged and preliminary studies on the outdoor space elements to form the analysis frame for the outdoor space elements of the geriatric hospital for the aged. The analysis frame consists of four elements: curability, safety, sociality and accessibility extracted by researching the documents. Two good examples for further study were selected after surveying 107 paid nursing homes for the aged and 72 paid geriatric hospitals for the aged around the nation based on the elements. This paper analyzed and assessed the outdoor space planning elements through field research and studied on the satisfaction and preference of users and employees to outdoor space through a survey analysis. The results showed the following order: safety, accessibility, sociality and curability. The application of safety and sociality was considerably low. That is, segmentation of psychological and physical characteristics will lead to more various and detailed outdoor space planning. |
