This study aims to compare the formative process of old downtown area, in Mokpo and Gunsan, during the modern period. Mokpo and Gunsan were became modern city after the open port at late 19th century. And then, 2 cities were developed and expanded rapidly, during Japanese Imperialism. Some differences and similarities are found in the modernization process, between 2 cities. Because of the geographical difference, the procedure of expansion is different in 2 cities, also the size and the orientation of blocks and lots are different. The functional organization of downtown area was maintained in Mokpo, during modern period, but that of Gunsan was not. After the late 20's, the functional organization of downtown area was became similar in 2 cities. The relative location of various functions, such as ports, railway station, administration buildings and the residential, commercial, official and industrial areas, are similar in 2 cities. And the colonial discrimination of the spatial environment, which was found in the Korean residential area, was same in 2 cities. |
