The works demolishing the boundary between city and nature began to appear in an attempt to fulfill the programs for indeterminate and diverse needs of our contemporary society and in an effort to refuse the dichotomized expressions of the modern architecture. Such works have been explained as 'landscape architecture'. Architecture began to play a role in recovering the meaning of the terra and its local value lost due to modernism. Namely, 'landscape architecture' is being highlighted as method of or role for such recovery. In a similar vein, the concept of placeness began to show up in the urban architecture in mid-20th century in order to establish a new relationship between environment and men forgotten in the modern architecture. History, culture and environment of a city are not created by buildings or historic relics as one or two objects but materialized by urban dwellers' life contained therein, forms as urban contexts and placeness therein. These two concepts of architecture began to show up as reaction to the uniform and dichotomized tendency of the modern architecture. The purpose of this study was to analyze the tendency of expression of placeness shown in the works submitted to the international competition for Dongdeamun World Design Park & Complex and thereupon, determine how our contemporary architects interpret the concept of placeness and express it in their landscape architecture. Lately, the Korean architecture has shown too pluralistic tendencies. This study focusing on expressions of placeness from the perspective of the landscape architecture may well be significant at this moment when the Korean architecture is being pluralized, because it reminds us of the essential value of architecture or 'place' and thereby, suggests some alternatives to find our own architectural language. |
