The type of multi-family housing apartment is the most popular residential alternatives in Seoul metropolitan area, raising up the efficiency of land use. Due to congestion found in cities, high-rise buildings, and a diverse range of other reasons, the user has difficulty in approaching desired destinations and often get lost. This study aims to address how exterior spaces can be utilized and the surrounding communities revitalized through plans that support effective wayfinding and the effectual site plan. For this purpose, Illsan new town, along with Kangil, Shinnae District were selected as study area for the application of Space Syntax theory, thus exploring major types of road pattern, and accessibility of wayfinding. An extensive analysis revealed that the dendritic form was the majority with 81%, then the beltway form with 16%, and both the bending and penetrating forms distributed about 1% each. The pattern with the highest degree of integration was the beltway form with an average integration value of 0.902, an intelligibility value of 0.533, and a dispersion value of 0.794. The beltway form has an average number of households with the smallest pattern or the inner roads of the housing developments and its traffic line have the highest integration and intelligibility values. Illsan new town has the most distribution of the dendritic pattern, but the effective placement and planning of the spaces can also be identified. The beltway form pattern inside Illsan new town's housing development has been identified as an advantage for way finding. Based upon the research findings, useful plan guidelines were suggested for future application of easy wayfinding and space components. |
