Most of the art museums are still adopting the traditional method of displaying art works; as a result, the changes in art genre affects to spatial changes. Especially, in case of salon exhibition, the changes of white cubes, which are a neutral exhibition space, greatly influence on the composition of display walls. First, the meaning of wall exhibition in art museums are studied from a literature review. Second, depending on the composition and arrangement of walls, various attributes of unit space are investigated spatially and physically in the aspects of opening ratio, domain characteristic, shape and proportion, and the location and the number of opening area. Third, based on these attributes, wall structure and spatial composition, the definition of axis and visibility, presentation order and hierarchy, and segmentation by the continuity and length of walls are reviewed. Fourth, from these reviews, the types and the characteristics of the display methods adopted by art museums are analyzed. In conclusion, the characteristics of wall presentation are derived by comparing the spatial diagrams of (1) the art museums that are arranged linearly depending on size, and (2) the art museums that are composed in a repetitive mode depending on size. |
