This study aims at exploring the methods of remodeling and repurposing, and thereby suggesting various cases of usage changes in foreign modern architecture. To achieve these purposes, the conservation and remodeling examples in foreign countries have been investigated, and the changes of usage and construction methods in remodeling were reviewed. The results are as follows. (1) All the cases studied shows that the historicity and meaning of the building are preserved through preserving their exterior and materials rather than being preserved as they were. Sometimes their interior and space design have been preserved in a manner to reinforce existing structures. (2) The remodeling methods are classified into 4 types according to causes : extension, renovation, improvement & rebuilding, and preservation. They are used jointly rather than individually. (3) The repurposing methods are classified into 3 types : continual, exclusive, and revived application. The continuous application is seen in educational facilities and public institutions and the exclusive application is actively used for various cases. |
