This study is to seek to create usable Privately Owned Public Space(POPS) in downtown based on an idea that urban culture can be realized through an effort for creating and improving place. To do this, it establishes the concepts of Privately Owned Public Space; analyzes the existing conditions of the space; and proposes the schemes to found the new relationship between urban space and architecture on the potential and possibility to utilize the space. Various open spaces located in urban buildings in downtown, such as outside parking space and privately owned public space, can be used as a potential space to create urban culture harmonious with street and buildings. In particular, it would significantly contribute to not only enhancing the image of the firm but improving urban environment if a private enterprise, as a building owner, provides usable street-front open space in recognition of the value of the building. This study suggests that a private enterprise-public partnership is required to make Privately Owned Public Space as a place for new, innovative urban culture. |
