In the conservation of traditional village of our country, the concept of the cultural asset and the scope of the physical preservation evolved expanded the point preservation of preserving the individual structures to the area preservation of preserving the aggregate of structures including the village scenery and surrounding environment. Therefore, the principles of the building improvement works were limited to the restorational works of the 'original form'. This, however, does not comply to the requirements of the present-day village folks mainly due to the changes in their lifestyles and values, which consequently weakened the sustainability of the traditional village. In this study, the characteristics of the traditional house of Seongeup Folk Village, Jeju will be examined in reflection to the on-going physical changes made by its folks today to suggest an architectural solution in which 'living culture' and 'architectural culture' can coexist. |
