This paper empirically estimates the effect of regional supply level of cultural services on household expenditure on cultural consumption in Korea. The supply level of cultural services is approximated by the number of employee in cultural service industry for each region (city, county, and borough) as adjusted by distances among regions in order to take account of both mass and distance effects in the framework of potential model. Multi-level random intercept model is applied since 4,113 household survey data are hierarchically clustered into 180 regions. Estimation results show that expenditure on cultural consumption increases for the households of higher income and education level as well as in the case one person households at level 1. Foremost it confirms that, at level 2, regional supply level of cultural services is positively and significantly related to household expenditure on cultural consumption, suggesting that policy efforts to improve local cultural environment can be an effective strategy for regional economic development and urban regeneration. |
