The purpose of this study is to explore the living characteristics of the elderly people based on the stages of elderly, a framework for the understanding of the general lives of elderly. So this study was examined and analyzed characteristics of old people’s living according to their health conditions and marital conditions, which are major variables affecting elderly life, for five points of time(at the current, 5 years later, 10 year later, 15 years later, and 20 years later). A survey was conducted on elderly people(60 to 64years old and own a house) in Busan, Korea. The interpretation of this based on 37 data by SPSS window 14.0 program. In case of health conditions was explored the relations between health conditions and housing types they want, this study found health conditions affected what they want to choose between living in the current house and moving into elderly residential facilities. When it comes to the relations between the existence of spouse and the preferred type of housing, it was found that elderly people who had their spouse preferred to continue to live in the current house. Meanwhile, for those who do not have their spouse, only a little portion of them wanted to live in the current house. And it was also found that the preference for moving into elderly facilities is not related to the existence of one’s spouse. Rather, the preference for elderly facilities is a common feature found among old people. The fact that one’s spouse is not alive lowers the person’s preference for living in the current house, and further it makes the person consider moving into a new house. The result shows the stage of elderly is very useful as a framework for the understanding of the general lives of elderly households to provide the elderly with a healthy residential environment in the aging society. |
