Even though nonstructural elements and nonbuilding structures are not included in the load-resisting main structures, they are attached to the surface of the building or anchored in the floor and roof. Therefore they are part of the consisting component of buildings and their importance, especially functionality, can not be ignored for seismic design of buildings. During earthquake attack, needless to say that the damages are enormous due to the collapse of main structures, the seismic damage of nonstructural elements and nonbuilding structures can not be overlooked. After earthquake attack, the given role of crucial buildings such as fire station, police station, and hospital should be preserved. If the mechanical and electrical equipments of the fire stations and hospitals were damaged, a fire can not be extinguished and surgeries of emergency patients can not be done. Furthermore, people can sometimes be killed due to falling objects and jammed doors. In this presentation material, the followings for the nonstructural elements and nonbuilding structures are investigated; 1) type, seismic hazards, and seismic characteristics 2) transition of Korean code provisions 3) difference of ASCE 7-05, ASCE 7-10 and Korean building code 4) performance levels. Based on the above mentioned investigated works, expected performance level which is suitable for Korea are discussed. Some extra code provisions to be included in the current Korean code, if any, are also discussed. |
